Dutch news agencies are reporting that the Defence minister, Hans Hillen, has announced plans for big cuts to the Netherlands Armed Forces.
The government needs to find ?1 billion in the defence budget and is looking to cut service personnel and defence ministry civil servants by 5,000, many facing compulsory redundancy.
The Army will lose tanks and the Royal Netherlands Air Force (KLu) could lose its entire fleet of 17 AS532 Cougar helicopters as well as seeing its F-16 force cut by “up to a third”.
At the moment JSF procurement isn’t affected and a second prototype will still be acquired, say government sources.
