The rehearsal for the flypast of Royal Air Force aircraft over London tomorrow for the wedding of HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton took place over RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire yesterday.
The flypast will consist of two elements; first the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane will overfly Admiralty Arch, along the Mall and then Buckingham Palace at 1330hrs local tomorrow followed by a fast jet element of two Typhoons and two Tornado GR4s. All aircraft will operate from RAF Coningsby on the day.
Two squadrons will be represented in the fast jet element – No 6 Squadron, based at RAF Leuchars in Fife is providing the two Typhoon FGR4s and No 41(R) Squadron, the Tornado GR Operational Evaluation Unit based at RAF Coningsby, is providing the two Tornado GR4s. Wing Commander Rich Davies, Officer Commanding 41(R) Squadron said: “The squadron have been very busy over the last few years and this is an excellent reward for their hard work. It’s a huge honour for the squadron, and personally I’m hugely proud to be involved with something which will be an iconic moment for the UK.”
Weather may yet scupper the flypast as a minimum cloud base of 1,000ft is required with visibility of up to 5km.
