Accompanied by an Ilyushin Il-76 carrying spares, six Dutch air force F-16s have left Volkel air base on their ferry flight to Chile, their new owner.
The second batch of F-16 fighters that Chile has purchased from the Netherlands today took off from Volkel air base for their new home. In total, the South American country is buying an additional 18 Dutch combat aircraft of this type.
In 2006, Chile already purchased 18 F-16s. With the current contract, the number of fighter aircraft of the Royal Air Force has decreased further to 87. On June 1 last year, the first F-16s purchased under this initial contract were handed over to the Chilean Air Force. The third and final six-aircraft batch was delivered by the Ministry of Defence in September 2011.
Besides the fighters, today an Ilyushin IL-76 transport aircraft also left Volkel air base, in Brabant, carrying spare parts and navigation equipment for the F-16s to Chile.
Defence Sales
Defence has decided to free up money by selling its surplus weapons. Besides combat aircraft, it is also selling artillery and tanks. All of these measures stem from the new defence policy adopted in 2007, which substantially reduced the size and missions of the armed forces.
